Servant Leadership

Servant leadership is a philosophy built on serving and developing your people rather than commanding them. Tom’s Navy mentors put it in five words: take care of your people.

What is servant leadership?

A servant leader measures success by how well the team is equipped, trusted, and growing. That doesn’t mean being soft or avoiding hard decisions—Tom is clear that leaders should be positive but never sugarcoat a crisis, and should accept the blame when it lands on their desk.

Servant leadership in practice

The stories in Servant Leadership Stories turn the idea into daily habits:

  • Become a “reverse apprentice”: ask employees to teach you their jobs
  • Walk the process and do the work yourself to understand it
  • Trust the people in the field, closer to the work, over distant staff
  • Keep your word, and admit mistakes immediately and publicly
  • Give every person a training plan—it says you see a future for them
  • Listen to your team’s problems and help solve them

Start this week

Tom’s challenge at the end of the book is practical: go back to your organization and find one broken process to fix, one person to mentor, and one opportunity to lead from the front.
